HEPATITIS c
Virus prevention IN EGYPT
Reducing
HCV
Transmission by Reducing Exposure
Project Prevention
Opportunities
Our project has many opportunities that currently exist that make the project much more easier to implement. Some of these are :
1.
The transmission of
HCV in Egypt is well documented in the international as well
as Egyptian medical literature.
2.
No new costly time
consuming research is needed to determine the primarily and by far most
significant route of transmission of HCV in Egypt. This is known.
3.
Prevention
interventions can begin immediately.
4.
Prevention is low
cost or in some cases, no cost.
5.
Prevention is technically
simple, i .e. reduce exposure to human blood. This does not require
learning new difficult techniques nor require expensive complex equipment.
6.
Moreover, the virus,
HCV, is, relatively speaking, fragile, easy to disinfect, and generally occurs
at lower viral loads than for example hepatitis B virus or bacterial
pathogens.
7.
There is no limitation
on local Egyptian human resources who have the necessary talent,
training, skills and experience to participate in intervention programs. This
is an untapped resource.
8.
Sustainability
is assured due to low
cost, available human resources, and the technically simple prevention
interventions.
9.
Reducing exposure to
HCV will improve over all infection control and reduce the transmission
of other iatrogenic infections.
10.
Prevention has no
cultural barriers. (for example, sexual transmission of HCV is rare)
11.
Prevention
is widely supported including the
Egyptian Society for Infection Control, the Ministry of Health and Population
and by other local public and private organizations and institutions.
12.
Setting up a local
prevention project is not complex and has a short start up
organizational period.
13.
Dr. Miller has years
of experience working in Egypt.
14.
Egyptian project
leaders and other participants in health care, dental care, pharmacology, and
education have already been identified.
15.
Relative to the size
of the HCV public health problem, the project costs are very low. HCV
prevention is cost effective.
16.
The project has built
in evaluation.
17.
IT and social media
will help propagate prevention and support evaluation.
