Prevention of HCV infection from Multi-Dose Vials:
The figure below shows how a Multi-Dose Vial can be contaminated with HCV and how to prevent this.

This diagram does not show what happens when you leave a needle in the vial (for convenience) or leave the syringe and needle. Reuse the same needle or syringe will spread HCV!!!

Here is instructions for how to give injections from multidose vials correctly.

For example, before preparing an injection from a multidose vial the person giving the injection should always wash their hands and put on a new pair of latex gloves (at least wash their hands). Open a new needle and syringe. First clean the top of the vial with alcohol. Fill the syringe and recap the needle. Replace the vial. The vial should not be replaced with a needle sticking in it or a needle and syringe sticking in it. The vial should not be left on a medical cart.

Clean the patient's injection site with alcohol. Give the injection and then - do not put the needle and syringe down or recap it - dispose the needle and syringe immediately into a safe disposal container so that the needle and syringe cannot be used again.

It is very important to have a safe disposal container for the used needle and syringe.
